Style Profile: The Penny Loafer

Ralph Lauren has this really great new style guide which includes information on classic pieces...

At the moment it’s the penny loafer.  I love reading these things because I learn so much about them that I never knew.  For example:  Did you know that Norwegian farmers first styled this shoe?  However, the American tradition began in the 1940’s and 1950’s when teenagers on dates placed a dime in their shoes (pay phone fee) to call home for a ride from mom and dad.  High schoolers later began using pennies instead – hence penny loafers.  It always makes for a good trivia read.
It was James Dean and John F. Kennedy that made it popular to wear them without socks.  See – you learn something new everyday.
